Here they come!

Get ready for the onslaught on hundreds, potentially thousands of gTLD's.

What a mess this is gonna be.

.hamburg Joins the List of Possible New gTLDs

Another candidate for a gTLD has joined the list of possible new gTLDs with dotHAMBURG throwing their hat into the ring for the gTLD .hamburg when ICANN invites applications for new gTLDs.

A goal of the initiative is the creation of a local identity for Hamburg citizens on the internet, to strengthen the feeling of community for the city and increase the attractiveness and accessibility of Hamburg as a place to business. They also believe it will help to demonstrate Hamburg is a modern city with a high quality of living.

The founder and head of the initiative, Hamburg lawyer Oliver Süme said he is pleased to announce the dotHAMBURG initiative at the ICANN meeting in Cairo this week. He also hopes, with the initiative now public, to be able to gain more supporters for project going into the application process.

More information on dotHAMBURG, in German and English, is available from dothamburg.de.

Well, I wouldn't register that one.

These new extensions sucks!!
.COM will rule forever.

.hamburger would be cool also. :D

Well I am sure someone will register casino.hamburg and poker.hamburg. Perhaps hamburger.hamburg as well.

additional possibilities:

Currently there are 21 of these gTLDs, such as .com, .org and .info, all of them using Roman (or English) characters. Groups already expressing an interest in applying for new gTLDs include those for .berlin, .paris, .nyc (New York City), .cym (Cymru/Wales) .car and .sport, among others.

I hope they own hamburg.com as well or else they will be in for a big surprise, I believe.

ICANN must be short for: "We cann do whatever we want."

.travel isn't even getting assigned PageRank yet by Google, so that should tell you what the search engines think about long awkward extensions. .hamburg would make .asia look good.

Yes, exactly.

Those new ones make .org, .net, and .info more valuable.

Good luck taking a bite at the popularity of .de.

this new gTLD biz is too surreal. i wish i could slap the faces of the idiots that approved this at ICANN. Cant wait to see lawyers gain more biz for C&D letters and Phishers go Phishing. I feel like im in that show sliders. wheres that portal?
