Just wondering why I never see anyone refer them or even talk about whois as a viable register?
Am I missing something?

Whois is not a registrar. Whois gets used to see the details of the person who owns a domain. You could perform a whois lookup on a domain and see noone owns it, then go register it. But you can't actually register domains through "whois"..they are not a registrar.

Thanks for your reply
But I have registered many names with whois dot com paid $9.99 for 1 year each.
One I listed on sedo, sold it, transferred to buyer, deal completed.
If you go to their home page all their prices and info is there.
However sedo does not have them listed as a register from drop down. Still confused

whois are not domain registrar but an affiliate which earns commissions from any successful sales through their affiliate links or banners.
Good Luck.

you may think you have registered a domain with that whois service but it's probably a registrar they are affiliated with and the whois folks get a commission for sending you there. look at the whois for any domain you registered with whois.com and you will see it's a registrar or some reseller your domain is with and not with whois.com.
