The letter "H" as the first letter in several words with Greek origin, such as helios, Helen, heptathlon, history, hectagon is an attempt to introduce "daseia" - a writing symbol resembling a right-faced hemisphere (another "h" word!) used on the vowels in the original Greek word (which instead lacked the "h" letter altogether).

On the subject of hectagon, it comes from "hecaton" (one hundred) and "gonia" (angle/corner). In polygons, the number of angles equals the number of sides :-D
