Pool always shows .orgs' domain deletition dates in the distant future, but then all in a sudden that status changes to a few days away from deletition. How does one calculate the day domain will drop when even pool is not capable of doing that correct?

For example I am interested in a domain with this WHOIS:
Created On:04-Mar-1999
Last Updated On:11-Apr-2004
Expiration Date:04-Mar-2005
Status:CLIENT HOLD
Status:pENDING DELETE

When is it suppose to drop?

status "pendingdelete": the name should be available in next 6 days.

when exp date is 04-Mar-2005, how can the name have "pendingdelete" status so soon?!

At expiry the registrar gets an extra year added by the registry, hence the 2005 date is irrelevant to the drop in these cases.

I know that expiry date is irrelevant here, but if it really was in "pending delete" status it would drop in 6 days. that 6 days are long gone. can someone explain what to look for here?

It must be Pending Delete (scheduled for release) for the 5 days to start from the updated date.

RGP stands for Redemption Grace Period. The Redemption Grace Period is a thirty (30) day period that begins after a registrar requests that the registry delete a domain name.

If a name is in RGP, the Status field in the WHOIS will show the name as "Pending Delete - Restorable.

Following the deletion of a name by the sponsoring registrar, if this registrar does not request that the name be restored during the 30-day RGP, then the name enters a Redemption Hold Period, or RHP. RHP lasts for five (5) days, and during this time the name is locked. After five (5) days, the name will become available for re-registration.

If a name is in RHP, the Status field in the WHOIS will show the name as "Pending Delete - Scheduled for Release."

Once a domain reaches it's expiration date an extra year is sometimes added to the registration. As long as the name still shows Pending Delete - Restorable or Status:CLIENT HOLD, then you should add 35 days to the Last Updated On date and the other status shown, besides pending delete.

And if it shows Pending Delete - Scheduled for Release, then you just add 5 days to the Last Updated On Date. When a .org shows pending delete, the expiration date no longer is relevant, drop date soley depends on Last Updated on date.

In this instance:
WHOIS:
Created On:04-Mar-1999
Last Updated On:11-Apr-2004
Expiration Date:04-Mar-2005
Status:CLIENT HOLD
Status:pENDING DELETE

When is it suppose to drop?

Because of "Status:CLIENT HOLD" we add 35 days to "Last Updated On:11-Apr-2004" and the name should drop on May 16th 2004.

As usual this is only my interpretation of the rules, we all know that each registrar releases them when they feel like it. ;)

Domainut,
thanks a lot! This was the best explaination. I know pool would show the real drop date soon, but I still wanted to know at least when to check back on pool so I won't go there every day, just to check when will it drop.

PIR's WHOIS server does not differentiate between "restorable" and "scheduled for release." Only their web site does. The "CLIENT HOLD" status is not relevant in calculating the drop date. You do add 35 days to the "Last Updated On" date, but the time (which was omitted from the post) is relevant as well. If the "Last Updated On" time is after that day's drops, it won't drop until the next day, so it may drop on May 17th instead, depending on the time.

This is a major issue as I have had a number of names expire which I thought were expiring say March 2005 as the Whois gave that date (seemingly temporarily for some odd reason) but was really 2004 exp. One name forced me to pay almost $100 to redeem it due to this oddity. How can we tell if that is happening or not?

Thanks for the heads-up and more feedback.

Registry shows the wrong expiry date in these situations.
Your registrar shows the correct one.
