read all the "Domains for Sale threads and all the Domains Wanted threads" going back 5 years.
see for yourself what sells and what buyers are/have been looking for.

read thru Beginners section, going back 3 years and learn to use the forum's search feature

you'll find many questions that come to mind, have already been asked and answered.

Good Luck!

imo...

Welcome aboard KalleMalle.
I completely agree with Biggie.
Apart from this, I would also suggest you to go through "Recent Domain Sales" to have an idea about what is hot in the market and how much are they selling for.
Do not pour any money buying crap domains before you have read through all the useful posts posts.
Do your research well, get to know the industry well before you go for investing in it.

All the very best!!

i don't know when a domain name as any value. Is there any tool or website i can use to research a domain name before i buy it

Adams domain sherpa interviews are where to start. Watch the difference between good and crappy domains.

Do a lot of research, and don't spend too much until you know what you're doing.

ok i have my eye on a few domains and will do a lot of research before i buy any

Hi there,
This is my first message and nice to meet all members here:)
I would learn how to start and post properly.

.com is where the money is.

Don't be tempted to reg a domain just because it's available and "almost" similar to a good one. A domain has to be "right" and "high quality" to sell.
