how to stop people stealing bandwidth?

Can some one please recommend a way to stop people linking to files on my site, and thus using my bandwidth?
I have a regular hosting account, not dedicated.

In the Cpanel there should be a place where to stop hotlinking of any given directory.

Can also be done by creating a simple .htaccess file if you are using an Apache webserver.
