Am I just stupid?

Why are people in a bid war at eNom for names before they drop? Doesn't everyone who backorders a domain get in on the "private auction"?

They let enom to know the name is hot.
And some of them donn't know there also have another auction after enom caught this name.

From eNom's Club Drop FAQ:

Why should I bid before the drop if there will be an auction afterwards?

All registrars participating in the drop process have a limited amount of resources to use in attempting to register domain names. That is, the amount of commands we can send to the registry is limited so that all registrars have an equal amount. As such, we use more resources to go for domains with higher bids. If everyone bids 2 points on a domain, we have no indication that this is a valuable domain, and we may not devote more resources to it than any other domain.

Therefore, it is best if you place a bid close to the amount you are willing to pay for the name, thereby indicating to us that we should try harder for that name.

There are a lot of clueless noobs - especially since enom opened cd up to the public

IMHO it's been getting calmer lately. Perhaps more people are employing the bid-high-then-call-to-cancel strategy.
