Why should I bid before the drop if there will be an auction afterwards?
All registrars participating in the drop process have a limited amount of resources to use in attempting to register domain names. That is, the amount of commands we can send to the registry is limited so that all registrars have an equal amount. As such, we use more resources to go for domains with higher bids. If everyone bids 2 points on a domain, we have no indication that this is a valuable domain, and we may not devote more resources to it than any other domain.
Therefore, it is best if you place a bid close to the amount you are willing to pay for the name, thereby indicating to us that we should try harder for that name.
