I have been browsing through some of the appraisals for the last few days and I can't figure out how in the same thread, people can rate a domain as $0 resale, and at the same time, someone else says it has a value of $500. How can there be that wide of a range on some of these sites. Some have stats to back it up, some don't. There are some names that get posted that I would never even think of going to, and yet they are up for as much as $1000 or so. I do understand the old adage, and it applies to more then just domains, but I will use domains as the word

"a domain is worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it"

Now, this post is just an observation, but I just want to state my opinion.

It is just surprising at the range you can find on a website. Because in one moment it can really depress a seller, but then someone posts a high price, and bam!, the seller is all happy.

Just goes to show you the value of domain appraisals doesn't it!

On the other hand a range of $0 - $500 here is far more realistic than the appraisals you get from the so-called experts at bug-name websites who appraise worthless domains for $50,000 - $2 million.

If you see a lot of zero to reg fee appraisals here there is a pretty good chance the name is totally worthless. You can also spot patterns. Certain posters who always appraise ridiculously high for instance. You will soon learn to discount their posts.

For the most part I think you will get more accurate and honest appraisals here than anywhere else.

In spite of what some might say, there really is no ultimate domain name evaluation model. Even among people who share the same exact model you can get wildly varying appraisals.

Its more an art and opinion than a science. There is some science (more like common sense based on what has happened before) to it; obviously a .com with a highly searched for generic term is pretty valuable but beyond that and even with that, nothing is set in stone. A name is worth what a buyer will pay. There are so many variables that are in constant flux to come up with a perfect domain name evaluation model. And then you have humans interpreting the results so there will always be opinions and knowledge or lack of knowledge that influence any given appraisal. There is also often an element of risk in some name choices that some may see as valid and others as foolish which will influence the way they appraise.

I think a person should have enough confidence and knowledge in their naming choices not to be too dismayed by a $0 appraisal. We all make mistakes but I think if you are trying for the higher profile extensions and aiming for well searched for generics or emerging industry terms or even just popular words, you will rarely go wrong. It is often with "brandy" type names that you will see the most varying appraisals imo.

It all comes down to what you can earn from a domain or whether it can be used for some other purpose. A name on it's own can't earn anything, it needs a site. Type-in names are worth a lot because they are easy to remember and you pick up traffic without doing anything. You don't even have to have a search engine listing. Anything else needs promoting, so it comes back to how easy it is to promote and how rich is the market. bonsaitrees.com is not worth as much as sportscars.com for example. It's also very subjective and dependent on national attitudes and market knowledge.

I've just read the other posts, and wanted to comment on search engine placement.

I own the domain horny-bitch.xxx I think there are about 30 or my pages out of around 175,000 total in a google search for horny bitch. I doubt if I am in the first 50 pages because I haven't bothered to optimise this as it is one of my early sites. The number 2 slot is taken by the domain thespectrumadventurer.com which is a portal site with heavy keyword spamming. I don't think the domain name matters anymore to search engines.

I've just edited the url to comply with board policy.
