I get a few of these emails every week from people in China, they buy the .CN domain and try to peddle it to people who own the domain in other extensions. Usually it's a .com or .ca domain I own, and would never even think of getting it in .CN.

Anyone else get these emails?

All the time. I have never checked, but I wonder if they even own them. They may wait for interest and then register them. Hard to believe that they register that many names and then hope to sell.

Every week??? For me it is just about every day.

There is even a name for that... it's called domain slamming.

I got them too but far less, perhaps they know that I read and speak Chinese. LOL! I still love .COM most; I even let a 3-letter .cn DROP.

Not just with the .cn, if I own the .com then they ask me if I want to buy the .net, .org, .info, etc. and 95% of the time the domain is available for registration and 4.99% of the time I own the domain that they're trying to sell me.

I also have the reverse happen, I own the .net or .ca and get offered the .com because it dropped. Some domain service picks it up and emails the other extension holders I guess. I've gotten a few good .com's for about $100 each that way. Wish it happened as often as I get offered the .cn names - lol.

I don't trade in .cn but read somewhere they can be registered for $0.14 If they sell just one domain for $100 they can register and drop another seven hundred and still break even. A higher sales ratio would yield a profit.

At the time they were slashing prices, the cost per one year was 1 Yuan which was about 13-14 cents then.

sureshot, .cn offers coming everyday is worthless for me.

one thing i observed, few of my .in / .co.in domains i used to own till feb09 and got expired, the guy came up with the same name but with .cn extn offer in may-june'09... so they are using a little aged database

second, if you own any tld except .com, they will come up with .com offer in low xxx $. This worked very well for me as I was owning some great .net and .org but I got anoffer mail saying last date for offer such an such. I went to whois, tracked them and grabbed them (in one case only, i backordered) . So it works more like, they are not goin to renew,,, i have a chance to grab!!

third, they offer other tld when I own .com with blah blah stories , titles like "exclusively" "reserved for you" etc...

That's the "beauty" of Capitalism. OF COURSE Verisign is ripping us off, their prime objective (as a corporation) is to maximize profits, remember?

On the other hand, CNNIC is a NON-PROFIT organization, basically run by the state, pretty much like the Corwn corporations in Canada.
