As more registrars digest a proposed settlement deal between VeriSign (Quote, Chart)and the Internet governance body ICANN, at least one is feeling some heartburn over higher rates they could be facing.

Last I looked (and tried 1 name) there were all kinds of restrictions that made putting several names with them near impossible. Transfers in or out I think being one of them. The domain price with Yahoo is really a come-on to use their "Yahoo for Small Business" services unit. They don't appear to be courting any "domainers".

I'm sure you can count on Verislime raising prices by the 7% max per year under the new agreement, and ICANNt increasing their current .25 charge per name as well. Now what was it that ICANNt does for us?

Yes, anyone who takes up Yahoo's offer, obviously isn't doing it or the purpose of speculation!

Yahoo is using MelbourneIT as the registrar, which is not the easiest to deal with.

Would it be likely or unlikely that we'd know about a price raise before it happened? I don't really feel like renewing all my names for a few additional years, but it makes a lot of sense to do it now if I'd have to pay a lot more in the future.

It's a little confusing still; e.g. GoDaddy charges the notorious $0.25 fee already whereas Enom does not.

Its not going to be a huge issue though... its like inflation... When the cost of supplies go up for a store... the store raises their prices... Since domains are going to cost people more... the value of them will just go up.
