I'm building a small niche search engine for fishing lures, the software I'm using gives me the option to set "relevancy factors". Each factor has a number between 1 and 10 with 10 being more of a relevant piece of information on a particular webpage. For now I'm just using the default settings.....Here they are:

TTITLE FACTOR.............10
DESCRIPTION FACTOR.....5
KEYWORDS FACTOR........5
CONTENT FACTOR..........1
RANKING FACTOR...........5

(ranking factor is the popularity of a page and number of pages that link to it)

If you were me, what value would YOU give to these factors. I myself thought that CONTENT should be higher.

Thanks,
ED

RANKING (LINK POPULARITY)
CONTENT KEYWORDS
TITLE

I remember some 6-7 years ago, one could type "mickey mouse" and easly endup in a porn site, because most engine those days trusted the description keyword.
At least, even the title can be tricked, it is public.

i'd say content factor should be a 10, not the lowest - title/description and keywords are all just basic info to try to attract traffic, but the content is king.

btw, could you pm the software you're using?

could you also pm me the software you are using please :)

Oh and btw, i agree, content should be the deciding factor - if a site is full of words about animals, chances are the site is about animals if you get what I mean. Title/description can be tricked :)

CONTENT FACTOR
RANKING FACTOR
TITLE FACTOR
DESCRIPTION FACTOR
KEYWORDS FACTOR

The power should be in this order. You should have a mini-google with this hierarchy ;0)

I have to ask this :

When you guys says "CONTENT" as one item and "KEYWORDS" as other what do you mean ? Aren't you meaning the meta keywords right ? Cause they're pretty much ignored for anything like ranking.

Also, by saying "CONTENT" alone, what do you mean ? the quality of the content ? the quantity ? Isn't the keywords relevance and density what we are talking about here ?

BTW, could you tell the software you're using ?
I don't think it is a sin to make it public, is it :)

yes, keywords are pretty well worthless these days. they used to be king at one time.
now keyword links on the other hand are very valuable, but i don't think that's what they are asking here.

as far as content; quality and quantity. keyword density is a part of that factor.

if i am correct in my assumption, the search engine script in use, probably doesn't go really in-depth like Google, I am sure, so when all these things are taken into account, I'm sure that is just the basics of these ideas.

to really 'build' a search engine, you would need millions, if not billions of dollars, which is only left to the big players.

I'm using Heathco Search Engine Software, It's got a simple web interface for administration. I've indexed approximately 430 sites with somewhere around 22,220 pages. I'm using it at www.lures.info

By the way....did you know that indexing sucks the life out of a server....The night I indexed the 22,220 pages it was using 60-80% of the resources on the SHARED server where I'm hosting it..........They sent me a warning.........whoops!!!!

Also...co$t to implement niche search engine:
Domain name thru Pool.com....$60.00
Software.........$99.99
Hosting/Year.........$17.40

total=$177.39
