Ok...

sooo..I finally get myself motivated to registering domain names as a "financial move" and not just, "oh, that sounds good, lets register it".

From what I have learned..and I need your help to get this straight...for the most part, domains are treated or act like property, much like a house or a plot of land. You buy it at the right time and sell it at the right time. That's of course if you are thinking of it as an investment.

NOW..here is my question: From an investment point of view, I have noticed there are names for "type in" traffic, names of people/places/things, names with keywords that pop up in the search engines quite often and names that fit a particular "niche". So, if I am looking at this from a purely investment point of view, I would have to take multiple avenues.

1. register or purchase to hold onto for resale later
2. register for traffic building either for adsense type or affiliate or both
3. develop a complete site to either sell or make money...retail, services, traffic etc etc..

Is this correct ..am I missing something..can someone make it more accurate?

from what I gather..one should always monetize his domain names..even when you think there is only personal value attached to it.

I am thinking of starting a blog of becoming a domainer...starting from having little idea to understanding the industry and hopefully to become stinky rich.

All help would be appreciated...

Steve

4. buy a domain which already gets type-in traffic and produces revenue.
5. then sit back and collect the checks!

ok..but to buy a domain that already gets traffic means you gotta spend at least a couple hundred bucks...and how much traffic is enough traffic? What amount should one earn per click to make it worthwhile? ..I don't know if there is a mathematical equation for this, but sa I get 1k clicks to one site...I should at least make $x amount of money or something is wrong..either with the advertising company or the site.

Which is more likely to sell - vacant plots of swamp land or beach-front property? Even if you have the resources to buy vacant beach-front property you might still not want to or be able to develop a high-rise condo on that property. So the likely scenario for a novice real estate investor is you look for property you believe is desirable at a price you can afford. Spending money registering domains noone wants is probably a common newbie mistake. You can find some decent expiring domains at Snapnames but often you aren't the only one and winning a bidding war may not turn out to be a great investment.

first you need a budget.

then you need to decide what you are or wannabe....

a domainer-reseller

a domainer-web developer

a domainer- reseller-web developer

a web developer- domainer - reseller wannabe

buying a domain with traffic/rev can be cheap or expensive, depends on your budget and knowledge.

registering a domain with traffic/rev is harder, but possible.

i recently registered 2 names and together they have got about 8 visitors and 3 clicks.
so far this month, rev is around $7.56, as each make close to $2.54 per click.

these finds are rare but still out there.

also depends on the risk you're willing to take with domains

the higher the risk...

ok..I got a domain..right now..it got about 600-700 clicks in 4 months..I made about $2.50 (ALL TOGETHER)..mind you it's on sedo (ha..got a click today..made a whopping .03 cents)..and also it is the FIRST time that domain ever went live ..so basically..no google or any search engine had indexed it. Domain is 10 years old.

I want to be all of the above. If I got a good idea and I think the domain would be better developed..I will get it developed. I am mostly looking for multiple streams of income and want to make it "steady" ...I've had it with making tons of money then making nothing..like this year..I was sailing all the way till August..then contracts ended..people didn't want to continue some services..and bang...pork and beans from sept on. so I guess initially, I would like to monetize what I have got and at least have it make a few dollars per domain per month...as soon as that is working, then I want to invest in more money making site, then move to affiliate stuff and possibly selling domains, but to make money selling domains..It is my opinion that most domains are ultimately better off being developed..but if it can go for 6 figures or more tomorrow..sell it.

That's where I am..I'd love some help to turn some of my current domains into money makers...if anyone can help, let me know.

Thanks,
Steve

steveto: Build up your portfolio and then move your domains around to various parking companies. On one domain I've seen my revenue increase by more than 15 times! While that's an extreme example, others I've moved have had at least a 3 fold increase.
