Internet2 to make domain names worthless

According to conspiracy buff Alex Jones (Infowars.com/prisonplanet.com) the implementation of Internet2 will according to him:

"Internet 2 would be greatly regulated and only "appropriate content" would be accepted by an FCC or government bureau. Everything else would be relegated to the "slow lane" internet, the junkyard as it were. Our techie rulers are all too keen to make us believe that the internet as we know it is "already dead".

"The first wave will simply attempt to price people out of using the conventional Internet and force people over to Internet 2,
a state regulated hub where permission will need to be obtained directly from an FCC or government bureau to set up a website."

If this is true then I'm suing ICANN for fraud because my domain names would be for all intents and purposes WORTHLESS.

No offence to the Americans, but your government really seems to think it owns the internet. They were suggesting to centre the internet around a few select corporate websites for online shopping, banking etc. Rest of the junk, aka free speech was 'junk data flooding the internet'.
They were proposing to control the contents of the internet after much hype about losses to the media and news industry through pirating and copyright infringements. Add a few people screaming about child abuse and online suicides, and this matter came scarily close to reality.

They were and still are considering this.

Its an idea that just wouldn't work. All that stuff in the 'slow lane' is mostly what people want, so if anyone wants to make a killing, all they have to do is open an isp that doesn't favor any site. How could the government forice isps to do this? They couldn't. The isp's juist want it so they can line their pockets some more. Oh, and Alex Jones is an idiot.

No offense taken since I agree with this. I came to fully realize this when the US government shut down several travel to Cuba sites for Europeans. Sorry, but the US has no right to enforce it's vendetta / sanctions against Cuba over in Europe.

The thing is that this would be extremely hard to enforce. The internet (and I mean the initial design of it) is designed to go around "damage" so unless the data is stopped at a critical place (host, registrar) then it is difficult to block and what if I have a .co.uk domain with a UK registrar hosted in Germany? Where is the US' right to dictate what should be on my site.

The internet is a wonderful tool, meeting place, shopping mall, research facility, movie theater, and whatever else it can be. If it weren't for the internet I'm willing to bet, at most, maybe 2 or 3 people here might know each other at best. It also eliminates the political blocks that our governments try to instill in us. Sure, my government can tell me that the people in (a country) hate the US but the internet gives me a chance to hear it from someone in (a country). Net Neutrality is the best thing ever - we can find what we need despite what our governments want us to believe.

To completely commercialize and regulate it (which is pretty much what this bill would be) would destroy what the modern internet has become and push us all back from being mature about each other to little babies who are force fed propaganda and anything beyond that would be watered down or already chewed up.

I think it's time I pulled out my old book "Behold a Pale Horse" and re-read it. I'm hearing some echos from that book now.

On this point, the UK government is already trying to take
over Nominet who operate the .uk registry. To cut a long story short.
Some year or so ago Nominet carried out a vote of all its members,
of whom I am one of thousands, asking to be allowed to change the
articles of Nominet. The change appeared to be championed by
two of the top people. Bob Gilbert and Leslie Cowley, you know the
business types earning £160K or so each year etc etc . The members
voted against such change, which kind of upset these two I believe
as it stymied their plans for Nominet.
BERR who are the branch of UK government that look after business
interests wrote to Nominet couple of months ago inferring that
they did not like the way Nominet was being run. The letter
referred to a meeting that had occurred between BERR and
Gilbert. I believe , but could not prove or say for certain,that
that letter was contrived to give Gilbert and Cowley an
excuse to do what they did next which is to recently appoint
and "independent" person to try and force through the changes
that they wanted the members to vote through last year.

So yes Governments do act like this and want to control
oevryone and everything that makes them money to pay their
own inflated salaries.
