$150,000 each? I'm in the wrong business and we've been charging WAY TOO LITTLE for puppies! :D

Tell me about it, training these Dogs is not easy. I think it takes 2-5 years.

Its a lot easier than most people think.

I watched a documentary on TVO a while back and it was not simple at all. They were trained for various tasks, and sniffing was the easy part.

Yes I know - I'm married to a professional dog trainer who has worked with police K9s.

Doesn't seem right or real. Cloning successive generations is not good as there is degradation as it goes along. It would be much wiser to just breed the old fashioned way for the best stock - not to mention much cheaper. Considering Iran is under sanctions and not exactly swimming in cash I cannot see this as being true. But then again they claim to have rocket powered torpedoes so who knows...

Most likely they haven't thought it though that much yet but it could also be a political / patriotism thing ( "Look what we can do!" kind of thing). But - breeding and raising puppies takes a lot of work including researching the lines, looking for genetic drawbacks, and then actually breeding them - what if it doesn't take? To raising the puppies with tons of risks to that (parvo, accidents, distemper, stress on the mother, distress, etc..).

Don't think this is just an Iran thing - the AKC (American Kennel Club) has actually been debating for a while now whether or not they should allow cloned dogs to compete in conformation and working (agility, obedience, etc..).

We're in a new age now where copulation (meaning sexual reproduction) is not really needed anymore.

Also - the article - that's not a German shepherd in the picture, it's a Belgian malinois. If that's one of the dogs they got from Germanythey got it from the wrong place. Everyone knows France makes the best working line GSDs and they're just as buddy-buddy with Iran as Germany is.
