is ai (llms) bad for humanity?

recently stumbled open a comment on some other forum (xenforo forum for their users) where a webmaster said:

Studies being done on AI are showing evidence to be bad for cognitive and mental health, and has close similarities with findings of screen time and social media use by children and young adults.

The hyperscale data centers going up are also purposely focusing on cost cutting rather than more environmentally sound build outs, and are often being put in areas that are affecting the local communities (either with air/water pollution or noise pollution). There are also cases of some data centers illegally tapping into water systems that they were not given permission to use. They are also being extreme load on electrical grids that already struggled to meet demand and there are whole counties in the US who are experiencing loss of power (forget the state, but one region has been without power for over a month).

And the economy is is propped up by AI due to vendor financing and larger investments that are not showing large profits.

my reaction is.. ???? whaaaaat?

am I missing something?

.. data centres are not evil.. the evil ones are tobacco, payday loans, gambling, child labour, businesses that thrive on human trafficing

it reads like you're not in tune with the people who live in these areas
these centers consume a lot of resources, water, electricity and land

Yes, I am not.. are they really that bad?

.. I assume excessive water consumption is really dangerous - for agriculture and nature.. though, it should be government who should look after this and step in when a possible damage is done.. if happens, and government ignores - departments investigating corruption of gov officials should probably step in.

Electricity.. well, it is produced by businesses, isn't it? .. why is electricity consumption really bad?

Land? .. in a small and tiny country > yes, this is an issue.. I understand that in States you don't have land issues .. also there are soooo many closed manufacturing buildings - if these can be used by film studios > probably a good one for a mega data centre

@Biggie what are your thoughts? .. of course, it is fine to disagree with each other on various aspects of human life

If an area already has limited water or an overloaded power grid, adding a huge data center can obviously become a problem for the people living there.

But in a place with enough capacity, or where old industrial sites can be reused, I don't really see the same issue.

exactly .. the water consumption could be problematic is some dry areas.. though this seems to be a government issue (regulating licenses/usage)
