.IS Iceland Domains anyone here have or know about?
I am looking at possible getting a really good .is domain name but i live here in the US. it seems like theya re pretty strict about who can register or own a .is.
the current owner is in iceland. Do registries commonly lift restrictions on who can own them after a period of time? Does anyone here know of a way to own one and not live there? False whois? PO box in iceland? etc?
i would hate to buy this name and have them revoke it from me since its a quite good one.

The TLD is quite restricted.
First off, in Iceland you need a kennitala (national ID #) for *anything*, including registration. I have a kennitala but I believe registration is for companies, not individuals. I only have one .is and it was applied for with the kennitala of the local company.

In your case I would suggest applying for an Icelandic trade mark. As soon as it is filed you can register the domain name on the basis of the TM.
You will still need an Icelandic admin contact for the domain but some companies provide the service for foreign registrants.
Another possibility is setting up a local company but it will cost more.
.is names are not cheap either. But if you really want it it can be done.
