This will be very interesting to watch. At the rate NS is going, it looks like they are going to cream the market way before the legal beagles from the registrars decide to give up.

How can they "cream the market" when you can't even order wls slots yet. If it does go live the other registrars would be competing for the same slots regardless of which ones start to take orders first

That's the trick, kid. If any participating registrars in the DCJ break silence and sign up for the SN WLS API before Oct 27, the chances of the legal suits being thrown out of the water become almost a certainty.

If all the DCJ registrars wait any longer than Oct 27th, NetworkSolutions will already have activated the system and creamed up the best.

It's really like staring into the barrel of a howitzer with the shell being loaded. Personally, I would like to see eNom participate way before Oct 27. They deserve better.

I don't see how this would affect the legal outcome in anyway. There's nothing legally preventing them from preparing for contingencies while presenting their legal challenge.

If the DCJ registrars chose not to support WLS, then it would be pretty silly for them to start taking pre-orders for it.

exactly, and i don't see any reasons why registrars wouldn't/shouldn't do the same. The registrars stand to make a lot from the initial rush since they will likely just grab slots on the best names and then auction them off to the highest bidder. they don't even need to take pre-orders.

Yeah act, and my point is that it is going to be difficult for registrars like eNom to take WLS pre-orders prior to the Oct 27th launch because of their support for the DCJ. This will mean NRR will have a field day at on round one when the bell rings.

I don't think that registrar grabbing slots for themselves will be allowed by Verisign, kid.

If it's a half-decent name, WLS subscriptions will be pretty worthless anyway.

Because as everyone knows, *if* the domain drops it will go to the WLS holder the game will be about calling domain owners prior to deletion period and trying to buy the name off.

I will predict WLS will have this effect:

Less dropping names available as more names get either bought off by domainers or renewed by current owners due to notification by domainers trying to buy off a name.

So it's all gonna be about buying names off owners rather than rely on the WLS slot.

I think you are exactly right Beatz. With virtually all of the drop catching services now costing an arm and a leg nearly everyone loses under the current system - and nearly everyone will lose under WLS. That means to have any chance to win and stay in business you will have to go around both the current auction systems and WLS and pursue direct owner contact.
