Is there any chance a huge company buys .tv?

Hi guys,

I need your help. A huge IT consulting company owns the .com, while I own the .tv. It is a 4 letter one-word generic domain and I'm planning to let it drop (at godaddy).

Is there any chance that company buys .tv?

There are a few companies that I know of that operate there business around the .tv extension.

There are several shopping channels in the UK which do so...for example bid.tv etc. There are more but I can't remember them.

It is always worth a try contacting them to see if they would be interested. (As long as it is not a Trademark of course)

yes, it could be considered as "bad faith", if you approach them.

or they could file a C&D if they feel you are "diluting their mark"


risk is the nature of this business


better if you had viable content, totally unrelated to their business, beforehand.

well I suppose there is always that possibility but if it is not a Trademark I do not think there is anything wrong. The most that could happen is they try and take it from you and because you are letting it drop anyway there is not really much to lose.

Obviously do not take that as proper legal principle however I think you are ok. See what other people think and perhaps you could me a more informed opinion.

If you were going to let it drop anyway I imagine the worst case scenario is that you approach them, they respond with a C&D letter, and you give up a domain you were going to chuck regardless.

Having a site established on the domain beforehand won't help you in court if you approach them with an offer.

Most well-known group I can think of that uses a .tv is Major League Baseball (mlb.com / mlb.tv).
