it's supposed to work in Japan.

Did you buy it off register.com, if you did you should ask them.

 

you mean .co.jp? which is what most japanese company's use.

The .jp TLD is already operational since quite a while. A lot of Japanese companies now use .jp instead of standard .co.jp domains.

like the top name, sex.jp = nothing

Maybe others do but i tried a few and got nothing.

A lot of .jp domains are not fully developed yet. Also mind that it's not so common for individuals in Japan to own domain names. Besides, .jp domains are expensive.
