I law firm representing a known celebrity has contacted me regarding one of my domain names. They have agreed to purchase a name from me for an undisclosed amount. They have requested to transfer the name to them and they would send me out a check. I have done my research and this is a law firm and not some phishing scam.

My question is, should I push the name to them before payment or reply stating I must receive payment first?

I recommend telling them you will transfer the name once you have their check in hand.

why not use escrow for everybody's safety? If the amount is good, offer to pay the fees, at least you'll have a peace of mind

Thanks all. I emailed suggesting escrow or send payment first. We'll see what they respond with.

Escrow is the way to go. A check is just paper until cleared.

Definitely the safest route. The money is deposited, you transfer the domain, once both parties are satisfied, the funds are released to you. Have used several times on large sales and have been very happy with results.

If we are talking about different currencies, there may be a delay in the currency exchange and approval. This might be a couple of days but other than that it was an excellent service and excellent communication each step of the way.

Good luck!

I assume the transaction has already started.

However, I wouldn't trust the lawyer.

I would have only used escrow.com. Or another lawyer like
Stevan Lieberman (or others.)

It wouldn't be the first time that someone stopped payment on a check.

They are in a position to take your domain and you would have NO recourse other than a name dispute, which of course you would'nt win! Hope you went the escrow.com route! Or paypal on a company card always works too, that way if they charge it back and they got the domain it's cc fraud on their end.

I would have replied that for THEIR protection, I have set up an Escrow transaction and transferred the domain there. That way, you seem professional and have their best interests in mind :)
