M-4 is a huge generic term in the firearm industry. The term has 45.5 million results in Google. WordTracker reports 20,790 exact searches per month for "m4" and 77,310 searches per month containing "m4". WordTracker also reports 2,310 exact searches per month for "m-4" and 11,460 searches per month containing "m-4". Either way, Google ignores the hyphen.
The United States Marine Corps has ordered its officers (up to the rank of lieutenant colonel) and SNCOs to carry the M4 carbine instead of the M9 handgun. United States Navy corpsmen will also be issued M4s instead of the M9, according to the Marine Corps Times. The U.S. Air Force plans to transition completely to the M4 Carbine. Lots of money-making potential for firearms manufacturers as these branches make the transition.
Regarding Trademark: On December 8th, 2005, a District court judge in Maine granted a summary judgment in favor of Bushmaster Firearms, dismissing all of Colt's claims except for false advertising. More importantly, the court ruled that "M4" was now a generic name, and that Colt's trademark should be revoked.
M-4 is also the name of a ballistic missile used in submarines. Source.
