This is not really news as it was covered in my post of :

IE 7.0 Announced of 28th March.

However, if hybernating rodents are now taking an interest, it shows what an important issue this is. The lack of support for IDN on IE has undoubtedly been the single widest hurdle to their wider acceptance. My own data shows that almost all IDN traffic currently comes from Mozilla Browsers. I think it is almost certainly the case that such browsers are more Internet Savvy on the whole than their IE counterparts are therefore less likely to "Type-In" on the address bar. I therefore think that we can look forward to a substantial increase in traffic once the IE is automatically updated into Windows XP.

I think perhaps you are a little out of date on this one. As far as I am aware the main registrars are no longer accepting registration for mixed language domains of the type that would be of use to phishers! No bad thing either!

Most of the browsers already support IDN names. Just another reason for people to move away from IE 7. Although I am sure I will still use it.

BTW RADiSTAR where in orlando are you located? I used to live there.

A little drunk last night. I meant Registry not Registrar.

I was under the impression that Verisign was in the process of blocking registration of mixed language IDN. Unfortunately, I cannot find any reference to this morning.

Any clarification on this would of course be welcomed!

This would clearly be a good solution, as there can really be no legitimate reason for mixing Cyrillic and Roman Charaters.

It is really only Verisign that needs to act as most target sites will be dot coms.

To avert the risk for confusion, the inclusion in the same label of letters in the Unicode Cyrillic code chart [1] and the Latin-based code charts [2] will be blocked for all relevant languages. The digits 0-9 and the hyphen sign may, however, appear in all labels containing Cyrillic or Latin letters. Individual registries may subsequently adopt more detailed policies for dealing with requests for names with justifiable and secure cross-script components in these code point ranges."

this will not appeal to the general internet public and that will be the main reason it doesn't ever really catch on. i've been domaining for 5 years, i've seen all the articles and read all the posts about idns, but still have no flippin clue how to use / access them, but also, really don't care to.

what about the general public in china? europe?

If you want to speculate in domain names, it is advisable to engage brain first. Some of us here would also appreciate it very much if you did the same before entering a thread.
