I have a 4 letter .org domain name that a not for profit (with the same 4 letter acronym) wants to purchase. Problem is that they are low on funds. The four letters do not really have any value to anyone but an organization with these initials. Parking revenue is pretty low ($1 week). They want the domain very badly. What kind of price would I be reasonable to insist on?

What type of non-profit activity they represent?

So if they think this name will help them in their pro-social work - I'd give them this domain just for reg fee or even for free as a gift.

Make sure you do your research just to check they are who they say they are, and not some huge health insurance place with $'s in the bank.

depends on which non-profit it is, but I'd have to agree in donating it (generally). Besides, depending on the value of the name and your income, you could use it as a tax writeoff next year.

Hi

i've received calls from "non-profits" concerning .org domains, and each time, they always say "we are low on funds".

in some cases it is true, but i always ask for $1k, if i'm in the mood to be "charitable".

ask them to make out a "charitable contribution receipt" for you in the amount of $1k.

It's mostly BS about nonprofits being low on funds and a commoin sob story they all use to get sympathy and good deals.

If you research them you will see they often pay their execs and top employees the same or in some cases even better than a for-profit business.

The best (or is it worst) example is the Girl Scouts with an incredible nationwide payroll and very costly buildings. With local scout leaders often earning well over 100k a year (while the girls and mothers work free). That was exposed in the media about 2 yrs ago on 20-20 if I recall correctly.

Most non-profits should not get any discounts, especially when you consider the fact they already get a huge tax break anyway.

Can you really get a tax write-off for more than your cost of buying the name? Seems generous on the part of the IRS but I guess it might be true.

You may consider leasing it to them long-term for something like $15 per month or $150 per year...with an option for them to buy at the end of the lease.

thank you all for your suggestions

as far as a tax write-off goes...I'm a student so my income is nowhere near the level of being able to use a write-off...it is an interesting concept to look into for the future though
