I received a phone call about a domain I only bought a few weeks ago. I don't have it listed for sale and didn't plan to even think about that for a while.

It was a hand register for possible development, but not anytime soon. Plus, I knew someone, somewhere down the line would have interest in it if I didn't get around to it. It's a great brandable type name.

I'd really appreciate any advice from people who've dealt with these kinds of negotiations (new hand registered, great name, they contacted me, etc.).

I wasn't looking to sell, but could certainly use the money these days :) and am not dead set on developing this one. Assuming they are going to try and get me to give them a price first...I'm not going to quote them xx,xxx, but do think it's worth x,xxx even if not right now.

Does it matter that I bought it only a few weeks ago? I'm certainly not giving this one away for a couple of hundred bucks...

It doesn't matter when you acquired it. What matters is the intrinsic value of the domain.

Sounds like you're in a strong position - you wouldn't mind holding onto the domain, so you can't be pressured to sell cheaply.

Throw a low-mid $xxxx offer out there. If they're a tire-kicker, they'll go away. If they strongly desire to own that domain, they'll come back with a counteroffer, and you're on the way to negotiating yourself a nice profit!

Get offer from them first.
Find out who they are if you can.
Are there any possible alternate domains?

Yeah...I'm trying to figure out who they are - they own a couple of thousand domains, but the sites I can find affiliated with them are under construction or not opening. And the names don't seem to point to any one type of business in particular.

The true alternative is the singular which is taken. But...since I don't know what their intentions with it are...there are certainly other creative names I'm sure they could think of instead.

How does one say 'well, it depends what you are offering?' without looking like a greedy, starry-eyed domainer? ;)

Tell them that the domain was acquired initially for development and that the development plans are currently on the backburner due to other projects.
However, since they called up you might consider any serious offer that is offered to you. Ask them what they want to pay for the domain. Do not tell what you are expecting first.

Also, during the phone conversation try to know as much as you can about them, their business, their address/location, why they need the name? etc... This will guide you to price your name!

Another thing to do beforehand is that you should think of some price for the domain you are willing to sell. This price should be the minimum you are willing to sell it for.

Goodluck! ;)

Here's what a good salesman would do...sort of pretend you don't want to sell it, and tell them if they make you an offer you can't resist, you will sell it...Thats just my idea to get a good offer off this company :)

Thanks everyone for the advice. Truly appreciated.

If I end up selling it - I will let you know!
