Need some domaining advice

Hi all,

basically I'm looking for advice about what domains are worth registering and what is a pile of crap.

So far I have done well with registering domains I like the sound of but that's more luck than judgment.

1.What do you look for when registering a domain?
2.Do I stay away from .net .org?
3. I look at the drop lists daily but I really do not know out of the 40,000 what I'm really looking for. Cant see the forest for the trees!

if nice sounding names have made you your "best" sales, then why stray away from success


in fact, this may sound contrary to the "sharing philosophy", but why even tip others about your niche'

Well what sounds nice to me may not sound nice to someone else lol

I have just been lucky I guess, would like more than just luck though, be nice to know other metrics to look out for

1. If you are a reseller: What other people will pay money for. Ask yourself, "If I were in their shoes, would I pay money for this domain name?"

If you are a developer: You're looking for what people will search for on google. All you care about is traffic. So consider what will get traffic.

At the same time, consider this; if the name dropped, that means it wasn't worth someone else's $8 to renew. So why should it be worth your $8 to register?

2. Stay away from them with one exception. Would the .com version be worth at least $25,000? If so, the .net or .org could be a good bet to register.

3. Do what I used to do when I tried to do domaining full-time; get yourself a cup of coffee, open up the drop lists, hit the down arrow a bunch of times, and don't blink.

Translation: Look at them all manually

If you're into a slightly easier route, try running a search for certain keywords such as "insurance", "travel", "flights", etc. and see what names are available.

Also, a service called Estibot (not an affiliate link) offers daily pre-appraised drop lists, putting the best of the bunch at the top, making your search for good expired names much easier.

What would be a good program to use for finding out the keywords? I have D.R.T will that be sufficient?
although I notice you have to have tones of proxies as companies hate you mining there data.

The only way I know is the old fashioned way... come up with a list of keywords (hint... look at recent domain sales at sites like dnjournal and namebio to see what people are buying), paste the dropped domains into an excel sheet, run a search to pull all names which contain those keywords, and then proceed to review them to see if they're any good or not.

I've never tried DRT, and I really ought to... I've been so busy lately that I haven't put any thought into domaining.

The solution around the proxies is to just pay for the product. I just checked it out, and looks like it's $249.

Honestly, the time and effort you'll waste on trying to get around paying for it just isn't worth it. It's valuable time that you can spend finding and selling names - the payoff of which can be easily more than that $249.
