而中國著名的語言學家，現年100歲的周有光表示，目前聯合國正在準備對所有文件進行簡體字化作業，他表示「簡體字好不好，小學老師說了算，因為簡體字真的讓小學生容易認、容易寫」，並說如果聯合國用了簡體字，那麼表示簡化方向是對的，也得到全世界多數人的同意。 他認為，目前國際上學中文的人越來越多，未來簡體字將會變成中文的唯一標準。同時，對於港澳台的簡體字運用，他認為目前香港推行普通話的學校很多，民間正廣泛推行，不需急於一時，應採用水到渠成的方式。 不過他也表明，推行漢字簡化的主要阻力在於台灣，目前有部分香港市民對簡體字不接受，也有一定程度上受到台灣影響，批評台灣反對簡體字，是把文字改革和政治問題掛。
