Lets leave out .coms for this question. lets assume we are talking about popular commercial keywords where both HighlySearchedTerm.com and Highly-Searched-Term.com are both going to be taken.

The question is, considering the four other alternative extensions .net .org .info .biz, given a choice between non-hyphenated domains in the two less popular extensions .info and .biz, such as HighlySearchedTerm.info, HighlySearchedTerm.biz OR
hyphenated versions of same in .net or .org such as Highly-Searched-Term.net or Highly-Searched-Term.org ... which are you more likely to register and why? What factors motivate your decision?

can't leave out the .com's, because they are always part of the equation.

also depends if your parking or building

if you're building, and depending on what market you are after could help determine your choice, when .com is taken.

then if your choice is chosen for you, by nature of your niche', then you want to get both versions "searchedterm" and "searched-term"

for instance:

if banksinidaho.com was taken, then .info would be the most logical second choice imo.
proving an information site listing "banksinidaho.info" and "banks-in-idaho.info

if buying for parking ...it's usually as waste of money.

although their are tons of non .com's earning cash from parking, you don't just go regging those tld's unless you've done research.

imo

hope some of it helped ;)

thanks for the input biggedon. i would like to here more from others though. does everyone see this as cut and dry? i thought it would enspire some healthy debate.

so it looks like you said you would take banksinidaho.info over banks-in-idaho.net? (point taken about getting both versions in the same .tld if you are developing, of course)

i guess the hope is that the terms are strong enough (generic enough? commercial enough?) that think its worth more than reg fee to flip it, and if it makes any parking rev. then its a bonus, and maybe you'll even hold on to it.

for a concrete example, though i'm sure these names are taken, but if they weren't, would you prefer to reg digital-cameras.net or digitalcameras.info? assuming you are not developing, and both digitalcameras.com and digital-cameras.com are taken. again, you might say, take both, but which one do you see as having more value?

If it was purely for SEO would take the hyphen .net or .org, depending on subject matter. Search engines don't seem to mind hyphens and they make the words look clearer in search results.

If it was for print type advertising, would likely take the .info non-hyphen first, and then the same .biz. Just too risky advertising in print or by word of mouth with hyphen domains. Would take the .biz if it was business or marketing related material.

I would also be thinking resale value, and the .info with no hyphen would likely be more valuable than all the other choices here.
