I just saw that GoDaddy is running a new $1.99 promotion. Some GoDaddy resellers are running the same promotion, e.g. see www.DomainRightNow.com where the regular renewal price is lower.

Considering that you need to buy something else to get that $1.99 price, I don't see it as such a good promotion, as everyone is talking. I've seen may other giving domains for free if you buy other services like webhosting.
