My oddest one is www.signdomains.com out of New Delhi India. If you go to upper left side and click-on Renew Your Domain and next enter the domain ALREADY reg'd there, instead of a renewal form coming up a transfer-in form comes up for transfering the name to them?

Tried many times and it happens over and over again on each of the domains Pool.com grabbed thru them, even though all are in fact already reg'd there, as verified by Whois. All support requests on this issue are ignored. Does not appear to be any way to renew the names. Very worried as some are expiring soon.

The mystery is how are these 3rd-rate registrars so successful at grabbing the names but so terrible at managing them and simply making sure their website works? How do firms like that manage to stay in business?

Who loves RGnames?
It's like trying to break a secret code! They didnt send me a password and the page that the email links me to needs me to have a password.
The html email was not coded properly so it is a bunch of html with a sporatic word here and there.
I had to figure out what name it was by process of elimination.

Frustrating as hell!

Yep, RGNames (Namewinner partner when I got the name I have there) is one of the primary problem children out there. I still have a name stuck there that I can't get out. They keep rejecting all transfer requests for no apparent reason and sending me notes written in Korean.

I have been in touch with a lot of people since that editorial came out. Can't say anything publicly yet, but looks like there is a good chance some of these registrars will be receiving pink slips from the dropcatchers they currently work for. If that happens it will be interesting to see if competing dropcatchers pick them up (as that would be a clear admission that they don't give a rat's a*s about what their customers have to go through).

Andrew told me (or he posted it??, I can't remember) that RG has left NW and now with Pool.

And, I double checked his site. He has RG now under Pool.

That's interesting. That might give me a better chance to get my name out of there - never got anywhere with Namewinner when RG was affiliated with them. I got two long overdue names today (another benefit of shining a light on some of these operations).

Yeah I purchased the name through the pool marketplace. now I see why the guy was selling it!
I literally can't get to my name. i contacted pool about 2 days ago and they said they would contact the registrar and have them send the info again but no luck yet.
So it looks like it is another registrar to add to the 3-5 bad ones I have names with.

BTW Duke I just bought a name from you at AN and didn't realize you were the owner until i got the email about 10 misn ago! Sent you an email.

Nice Job Ron - Super Article!!! Bet that was a chore getting Richard tied up and taking that picture? He will probably want residuals on that one as well... Ha Ha - Lets see if you hear anything from any of the Registars or Icann? That ought to be interesting - Steve

I hope this turns up the heat. I love a good dust-up.

Great work Ron.

Looking forward to the book Chris. As a non-programmer scripts and software are the same thing in my mind. Looking forward to learning more about the differences and how this process, that is still a mysterious one to most of us, really works.

As a programmer this bothers me also. While a script is a program, not all programs are scripts, and while it is insulting to call a program a script that is not one, it is not in the reverse, so if in doubt, call them programs.

No I don't.

*gasp

Any plans to go rss with your site?
You posted that FeedDirect gives you a nice surge in traffic. Why not go rss? You'll get a ton more sets of eyeballs on your site.

I have had no time to look at it - working 16 hours 7 days a week hasn't left me a lot of time to consider adding somethng else, and more importantly I've had no one ask for it, so it hasn't been a front burner issue. I've heard far more people ask for email newsletters so I'm not sure how many people use RSS yet. I haven't even used it myself so I don't know what the advantage would be. Maybe I'm missing something but places like Yahoo already let you customize the news you want to see. I have my own newspaper set up there and it delivers just what I am interested in.

Duke, an RSS feed from your site would get it a LOT more exposure.

If you don't know what it is, we should talk on the phone. I can clue you in on that and other issues :)

I had said i won the name through pool w/ rgnames and I looked to see and they were listed as catching for pool however I just realized that it was not won with pool but with NW. I actually emailed Pool about a name which i never received the login for and it was not rgnames but someone else. The name i won with RGnames was via namewinner.

Just wanted to claify that as my post was incorrect and their listing as catching for pool is incorrect unless they switched this week.

Thanks

John
