The French Registry introduces fr-domains with accents and other special characters. You can register since 3rd May 2012 fr-domains with special characters like accents. There are two phases: a "grandfathering period" between 3.Mai and 3.July 2012. Owners of fr-domains can get their IDN .fr. After 3rd July 2012 anybody can register fr-domains, re-domains, wf-domains, yt-domains, pm-domains and tf-domains with special characters.

I just wish the .fr extension had no residence restrictions, like .pt has done!

Not sure this will take off... I haven't done extensive research (Adwords keywords, for example) on accented vs non-accented searches by end users, but this should be interesting.

yes, accents are used a lot in french searches.

when something is written in capital letters, french usually leave it without accents
so i would expect they do not have much problems with domains that are without accents
i would write my domain in capitals to keep everybody happy
