I thought you would all be interested in a new weekly column at Domain Name Journal which will list and analyze the Top 5 sales each week at Afternic, as well as those from Sedo and other sales venues (including this forum when applicable). The column will be updated every Saturday with the top sales from the previous week (ending the day before). There is a lot to be learned from what is selling each week and in looking into this I am surprised by how often my idea of what makes a domain name sellable is exploded by some of the names that are actually selling! :-D

The first column is now avalable through this link:

Domain Name Journal - Domain Sales Column

I think if you check out what sold last week and the prices the domains went for, you'll be surprised too!

Looks good Duke, That should be a popular page..

First.De (40K).. that has to bid well for .US and other top country extensions.IMO..

You have a typo though..

Nice sale Jordan. Was that in the week we were reporting on (Oct. 4 through Oct. 10)? We will be updating Saturday with the new sales list for Oct. 11-17. We want to show sales for the previous 7 days period. I have contacted Sedo to see if they will break ther sales info down for me and give me just their top 5 for each week. Right now their site only refers to recent sales and no telling how far back those go.

Also Bidawinner thanks for catching that typo - it has been fixed. I always appreciate it when those are pointed out so they can be quickly corrected .

The fact that the top sellers featured several country code domains (including .uk.co and .at) surprised me as well. I also think that could be a good omen for .us (which also had one of the top sales with IAC.US).

Very nice idea Duke! Should prove a useful tool for all of us in the business.

Are you planning to use this data to analyse trends and possible future treads regarding the sales of domains, e.g. before and after WLS (if it is introduced)?

Thanks
Rob

We will comment on the data each week and will keep an eye out for any developing trends. I probably won't purposely mix WLS into this area - but if it has any effect on sales prices the data should make that apparent.

I heard back from Sedo tonight and they love the idea and will co-operate totally. They also gave me some great ideas to make it even better. I think we will wind up making Domains Sales an entire new section of DNJ so you will be able to access it from the left hand menu anywhere on the site.

We may change the day each new week's stats is released since employees at the sales companies will have to contact me with the data (might be hard for them on Saturday mornings). Will probably make it on Monday's for the previous week's sales. We are also thinking the data will need to be for completed sales with verifiable WhoIs changes. The public Afternic list is actually for sales agreements that have been reached - but some of those fall through in Escrow (I understand that happened with Indiana.com).

Rather than report sales separately, company by company, we will make it one master list of top sales - noting the selling venue next to each domain. I think most major sellers will want to make sure their top sales are included because it is good publicity for them. We may also have a separate list for the top new extension sales so people can track how those are progressing.

Congrats on the sale Domainut! It will be interesting to see if it makes Sedo's Top 5 for the week. They will be reporting their sales to me Monday. We are going to collect data on that day (rather than Saturdays when most people are out of their office) and publish it on Tuesday mornings.

By the way Domain Systems has also agreed to contribute sales data. They are MAJOR players. They handle Ultimate Search's entire portfolio and their clients include Disney, the NHL and other corporate giants. They have hundreds of domain sales each month so their input, along with the results from Afternic, Sedo and others, will make the sales lists very interesting I think.

...The same is true for AmericanSuperstar.com, a domain that is a bit long and is available in every other major extension except the .com. The fact that someone would pay $3,000 for it rather than take the .net for a registration fee underlines the continuing importance placed on .com by end users...
So true. You read my mind. :)
