For Sale newbie question - how does one quantify links ??

Thanks for a great site and forum - as a newbie i really appreciate a site like this and all the great info and assistance in it. My question is as follows - how does one quantify links/traffic ? Is it just the indication shown by alexa or alltheweb or is it a combination of all the links found from all of the different search engines.
