You would think they'd be OK with it as a fan site. But that hasn't stopped some music groups and sports franchises from going after and winning such domains.

Yep, this can be seen by some as a proof of bad faith...
Personally, if I do register a TM or it's variation, it's usually when I really am a fan (or a hater) and develop it accordingly.
