I keep thinking about the one that failed miserably. I want to say it was Box.net (Box.com now) but can't quite remember... I know they came out with a lot of jazzy TLDs that you could get, but the caveat was that users had to install a toolbar that would essentially assist in rewriting hosts files. Toolbars were a hot thing (to trick people into installing) back in the day, but computer-savvy people never truly trusted them, for obvious reasons. The way I see it now, and how it might actually succeed, is ICANN being seen as a monopoly over domain names and the companies that are popular for being browsers will end up natively supporting them without an added extension. Opera is already doing this, so I think it's safe to assume people will follow. Will names be worth thousands? I don't know, maybe a couple will. The timeframe of knowing whether it works or not is much too long for me to know. I'd rather stick to a tried and true method of .com. Likely won't be as it's trademarked, along with others. It would be a lengthy legal battle and might even involve government intervention. Way too messy... With free speech at the heart of discussion now with Section 230 being disputed for something that would give the government even more oversight, I don't think that blockchain is out of the question... It could definitely be a viable solution, especially with everyone getting the Big Tech boot. I just don't think that I personally can invest in it where it stands today. I might change my mind, as I have experimented with NFTs (unrealized gains--will publish results later).
