Following the failure of mw.org to drop a few days ago I enquired why from PIR.Org and received the following reply:-

Please see http://www.icann.org/tlds/agreements/unsponsored/registry-agmt-appk-26apr01.htm

which details the reason that it is not possible to re-register two letter domains, once they have been deleted.

What do you think that will do for the value of these names?

Thanks for the correct link, MWeb :)

All two-character labels shall be initially reserved. The reservation of a two-character label string shall be released to the extent that the Registry Operator reaches agreement with the government and country-code manager, or the ISO 3166 maintenance agency, whichever appropriate. The Registry Operator may also propose release of these reservations based on its implementation of measures to avoid confusion with the corresponding country codes.

mw is on the ISO 3166 list for Malawi, but how about fs.org ?

I think that there is going to be quite some furore about this over the coming months...

Maybe UTF-8 of International characters, eg : Chinese Characters.

I was just perusing character combinations and I came across this one at Register.com. Is this their solution for trying to quell inquiries on the record?

Internic.net's record implies it's probably already expired.

D. Second-Level Reservations for Registry Operations. The following names are reserved for use in connection with the operation of the registry for the Registry TLD. They may be used by Registry Operator under Subsection 3.6.1, but upon conclusion of Registry Operator's designation as operator of the registry for the Registry TLD they shall be transferred as specified by ICANN:

Well, I ran across this article:
http://www.denic.de/doc/DENIC/presse/bindestriche.en.html
Article Reads:Step necessary to prepare for Domains with special Characters
Domain names, which begin with a character string that in the future will denote a domain with special characters (so called Internationalized Domain Names, IDN), cannot be registered anymore under .de for the time being. This applies to all domain names that have a hyphen as third and fourth character, such as zq--example.de. With this measure the German registry DENIC wants to make sure that the subsequent transition to the new domain names will run smoothly from a technical point of view and that all parties interested in IDN have the same starting position for a registration. For the same reason no pre-reservations for Domains with special characters will be made. Already registered domains with hyphens as third and fourth characters continue to exist and can be used by their owners in the same way as before. Additionally, changes to the registrations terms and guidelines are necessary, because in the case of IDN for the first time the registered character string does not correspond with the name or term for which it stands and which the user types into the web browser or as an email address.

The restriction on new registrations of 2-letter domains has been in the .com / .net / .org agreements for years now, and has been in all the new TLDs from the beginning. However, it doesn't seem to have been enforced for .com / .net / .org up to now, but apparently the new .org registry is taking this restriction more seriously.

I presume, however, that existing registrations will be able to be renewed, or that would be bad for sites like the Libertarian Party (lp.org). Thus, the only problem would be if an organization is careless and lets their registration lapse.

I was concerned that I would be able to keep my 2c .org's, but I can now confirm that they are grandfathered into the system and can be renewed and transferred to new owners.

Once they drop though, they are gone for good. So let's hope the Libertarian party keeps up on their renewal fees. :)

Thats funny given that the last time I looked
ME.NET was over $1500.00 on Namewinner

This news only relates to .ORG names, not .NET or .COM or any others. As far as I can tell, 2C .net's and .com's are still dropping and being re-registered.

UPDATE

I queried why Snapnames no longer allow snap-checks for ANY names under 3 characters and got the following reply:-

"VGRS, the registry for .com and .net have stated that 2 character .com and .net names will not be allowed to register again if deleted."

Looks like all 2 character/letter names will no longer be allowed to be re-registered on drop.
Anyone else heard anything more positive.

I got a snap on a 2 letter domain, and I think im just gonna leave it to be on the safe side. Afterall, it still could drop. Stranger things have happened. :)

Yeah - i remember that 3 letter .com once dropped when nobody thought it would and...uh well that's another story :D

Let me ask you this...I have a snap on a 2 letter .org....should I keep it??? ;)
