It took me three days to finally decide to register one kids.us domain. The name I regged is Encyclopedia.kids.us. I was very tempted to reg Spy.kids.us, but thought that encyclopedia would provide greater potential.

My plan is to talk to Microsoft or one of the major encyclopedia cos to partner in development.

Does it sound like a sound idea or should I have buyer's remorse?

Buyer's remorse? More like, smart move.

It specifically states in the Kid.us rules that each site should have varying degrees of educational content on the site. You can't get much better than having a "kids" encyclopedia for a site...

I'm not sure if Microsoft would sponsor your site, but I'm sure Britannica would be more than happy to help you out with content on the site, and securing a sponsorship deal. You could have a page for parents that explain the "partnership" that you have with Britannica. Britannica would like that.

oh, and if having a "key" educational resource term wasn't enough, "encyclopedia" has 153K on OVT for 6/03.

btw: Stay clear of "Spy.kids.us"... It's one of those names that "look" good, but are more trouble than there worth

Thanks izopod,

Microsoft was chosen due to their product and site www.encarta.com. Also, they seem to have a few bucks to kick around ;-) .

You advice on 'spy' was noted; however, in consideration of the potential negative connotations and TM infringement potential, it was not a viable choice.

Thanks again for your input.

Now what was encyclopedia.com worth back in 1994? Well that is my appraisal for encyclopedia.kids.us today.

Seriously. You have a domain that may well be worth millions 5 - 10 years from now. Today kids.us is just to new to tell.

I'm still just a semi-believer... too soon to tell.

Time to build out this name-space.

I believe we think alike! I think you have nade a HUGE long term investment. I myself have snagged freegames.kids.us!

Think of the market potential. With everything these days being "child friendly" or "child proof" like the vchip for TV's and parental guidance warnings....this is no "phase".

Obviously we are not the only ones thinking big here. I noticed jokes, health, games, and free.kids.us, just to name a few, are already taken. Just to get listed on the kids.us website should return staggering amounts of traffic. So far only one site is listed there....again, huge potential!

Good luck with your venture.

Shimkus unveils dot kids

Zhanda Malone , [email protected] 09/10/2003

Congressman John Shimkus has announced the official debut of the .(dot)kid.(dot)us Internet domain.

"After several years of pushing for a safe place on the World Wide Web for young children to surf, the President signed my .kids legislation into law last December," Shimkus said. "Neustar, the company charged with implementing this new Internet domain, has quickly sought to get actual sites up and running.

Shimkus said as of Sept. 4, many Web sites have registered with the domain name of .kids.us.

"And Neustar is taking new registrations and adding more sites as they join," Shimkus said.

Shimkus said it is very difficult for parents, teachers and librarians to keep an eye on children while they work on the Internet and using filters doesn't always work.

.kids.us provides a children's section on the Internet.

"That's why I hope to encourage businesses -- large and small, educational institutions, government agencies, and everyone with a Web site to also get a .kid Web site," Shimkus said.

"That way parents, including myself, can set parameters for our computer's search engines limiting young children to access .kids.us sites only."

Webmasters interested in adding their content to a .kid.us Web site can log on to www.kid.us and register their domain namer. The material on .kid.us Web sites is reviewed to assure that content is not inappropriate or harmful to children 12 and under.

"I am also encouraging parents to contact their children's favorite Web sites to encourage their participation in .kids.us," Shimkus said.

"Without many sites to choose from and without parents getting involved, this effort to protect our youth won't be successful."

"Every [Kids.us] site will be a safe zone for children... We must give our nation's children every opportunity to grow in knowledge without undermining their character ... We must give parents the peace of mind knowing their children are learning in safety."

The launch of the Kids.us domain coincides with the recent arrest of the Internet's most notorious "typo-squatter." Typo-squatting is when common misspellings of popular websites, including child-oriented destinations, direct the user instead to a myriad of "pay-for-click" websites, oftentimes of adult-related content.

THe name ought to be one of top-top tier .kids.us names. I am pretty sure I saw the (actual) name in the news several times - I believe it was used as an example of the powerful nature and potential of the .kids.us space (eg. " ..The actual domain names will end in dot-kids-us, as in encyclopedia.kids.us. .." Source: http://www.gafam.org/gfcbulletin.aspx?a=40&y=2002

I bet the name was heavily bidded on in the sunrise period, for that reason alone. I didn't even bother with it thinking it would be a tough chase.

Also, good luck with your sponsorship efforts. You will definitely have offers to choose from, IMO.
