I work heavily with Sun's products and used to be at a Sun reseller.. from what I hear, MySQL will be MyToast.. They may also give up the servers business.. (Sun OEM's Fujitsu servers on the high end anyway).

Sun just had massive layoffs in the NY/NYC area.. lost some really talented people.

In chaos there is often opportunity. I think that MySQL is still open source. If so, one would guess (and hope for the sake of those using MySQL as their production DBMS platform) that another large player might want to take it on.

Even so, one can certainly understand that decision given the nature of Oracle's business.

IMO Oracle is going to start building very fast systems designed for databases that cost several million a piece... like Teradata does today.

If they come at the right price. Unfortunately for many in th e field, the right price has been coming from overseas quite a bit lately. I agree however that anyone that can do quality work at fair prices has all the work they can handle.

Open source? If you can figure out their licensing, you might be able to get a job at M$

Seriously though, I hope someone forks it if that's the case.

I also wonder what will become of openoffice... Sun has been a major supporter for quite some time. Among other things.
