out of date for ages

Does anyone know why some domains have the out of date for a long period?

For example two I am looking at have that status with last update 11.2001 ??

it is my understanding that the 'update' feature is ONLY effected when the registrant/owner makes changes to the original reg'
info.. like Tech/Admin/DNS etc.. or transfer of ownership may fall into that category as well..

i believe that i'm correct on the 'update' being only when the owner makes changes to either their personal data.. ie: email or address.. or.. other details such as the tech/admin/billing data.

To my understanding, the domain is just "on hold". I beleive the period is a few months, when e-mail/website are down, and the owner can renew the domain in this period, and if he/she doesn't the domain will expire. I think NS/Verisign has been known to "hold" on to these domains which go on-hold sometimes.

Are you talking about a domain's 'update' status

or are you speaking of a domains' expired status?


you mention kinda both in your post..

so, my initial response was in regards to an
update.. vs an expired DN

Reg's may wanna hold those names which expire, and not
put them back in the pool.

i too have seen this very thing.. many times

Oh, sorry, I didn't read your post clearly, you wern't talking about expiration dates.. :shy:

and they don't invite just everyone too the party.. :laugh:


it's wrong.. cause the names should drop back into the pool
after say 45 days of expiration date (to give the current registrant enough time to gain back his piece of the cake) and after that.. it should be dropp'd so all can have the opp' to register the name..

Yeah ...somehow this must be illegal - as domainnames are a) only rent so when expired they should be available again and b) it's not like just because for instance Verisign registered a name for a client and the name expires that Verisign is in any way the owner or anything similar of that name.So they shouldn't be allowed to stretch the onhold period from 6 days to several months or years or even keep it for their WLS.That should be illegal.

I agree BeatZ..
the Registar doens't own the name if it's expired.
and should go back in the pool.

should have a STANDARD drop date required for all registars.
(might be the case.. but they are not all following guidelines)


** On BuyDomains.. they state that the 'renting of a name' is
basically false.. and that registars should not post that.. they state that when you reg. a name through them your are NOT RENDINT.. you own.

?? not that confuses me... cause, if i owned the name, i should never have to renew it.

you got the title/registration doc's
and your not gonna have to buy that car again next year..

so.. the registration time frame, evidently is a 'time frame' of ownership.. which can expire at the end of the 'lease' so to speak.

i think BuyDomains has that posted incorrectly on their site.

i think is what controls and earns both of the

a healthy 'SnapName'/'NameWinner' income..

Don't they have a V.broker svc now? yes..

and so... if they have the power to
a) not release the name
b) make it appear it's still registered...

and so... if it's taken, when you search for that name
on Register.com..
a window will pop up..
and invite you to bid on that name.. through AfterNic.com

I'm sure Register.com would much rather get..
$100 - $500 for a bid on a name they hold..
vs. letting it DROP.. and they make nothing.. if another
Registar snag's. it.
