Paedophiles can operate on childrens chat rooms on the Internet - would a paedophile register help overcome such predatory behaviour?

This week the Nation's Police Ministers agreed to a National Paedophile Register. The Register will list the names of individuals who have been convicted of child sex offences.

What will be the effect of such a register? What is the overseas experience?Are there other ways to stop paedophiles?

Trevor Chappell spoke with Barbara Biggs, who is a child abuse victim. She has written about her story in two books.

Barbara spoke of the thoughts of victims about such a Register. She said it was a first step and it was great .. "I think there should be a paedophile register, but I also think we need support programs for paedophiles to help them stop offending - much like we have for heroin addicts. 12 step programs and 24-hour support line for people who feel like reoffending".
