Mac is probably the best computers to make graphics or movies on because they are built to do so. Another close leader which is good for making graphics is Hewlitt Packard. They seem to be right under Mac's according to Consumer Reports for image processing.

ok, here goes.
I have (personal, not in my office) a total of 6 running up to date computers. 2 are running win xp pro, 1 win xp home, 1 RH linux, 2 Mac os X of which 1 is a powerbook G4, and the other a power mac G4.

For web *development* , the win based machines are better. They are also beter to view your final product as more people us them.
For *designing*, the mac wins here.

For general use, there is absolutely nothing i have ever seen that is as good as Mac OS X. it is simply the world's best designed OS (IMHO, and I have been using/owning computers since 1979).
The win Xp problems are vast and it is a system that gets heavier every day with pacthes, security holes, viruses, intrusions, and yes, crashes).
OS X is smooth.
However, were I to have only 1 system, it would have to be win xp based, beause i can manage to do the design/development work, and have a wider base of software (such as custom made name grabbers etc...), and, i would be seeing through the eyes of what most of my end users are seeing.
The ultimate is getting both IMHO.
But as far as doing your job with no worries whatsoever about intrusion attacks and viruses and crashes, and using an OS from hell, the Mac OSX reigns supreme here.
They are real tools and masterpieces that allow you to do your job with no worries.

I have used macs at work and PC's at home; nothing beats a top of the line Intel-based machine. The problems some face with XP are due to bad configurations, not up to date drivers and using AMD CPUs instead of Intel P4. The macs are overpriced, cryptic and less than 1% of the world's consumer computer inventory.

If I got a mac as a present, I'd sell it on Ebay as fast as I could!

Applications and Software also matter a lot as well as the hardware...

I only like Mac's b/c they look good. But I like regular desktops for the way they run.

I am going to be buying a new computer. Does anyone have any insight as to which is better suited for web design functions, a PC or a MAC?

Is there a difference on how software packages work on the two?

i.e. Macromedia, Cute FTP Pro, and others....

well aside of the fact that some applications, notibly graphics and 3d apps, especially from adobe are optimized better for the mac and its velocity engine and run faster, Mac oc just makes it easier to do things in a shorter amount of time. That means saving time and money. And of course no security hassles.
again though, although i own both systems and use them both, If i had to get only 1, it would have to be a win based machines especially in the domain business, because there are so many more programs available for windows.
I love both, prefer the mac, but because of the way the market is at the moment, i can see how windows makes more sense if one has only 1 machine.

I find these PC vs Mac or Mac vs PC posts kind of pointless, as each have there strengths and weaknesses. its just that the mac has more strengths, and the PCs more weaknesses.

Especially in photoshop, just google it, the Mac beats any comparable PC by a factor of 1.6 to 12 X

Also, Apple has excellent support and upgrades.
Do you know how easy it is to switch a G4 400 to G4 1.2?
no motherboards, nothing, Just swap and go.

Thats from the company that brought you the GUI interface, the mouse, and plug and play instead of plug and pray.
*GUI invented by Xerox, but first implemented by Apple with the Lisa then mac.

LOL @ seeker. You can't be in the middle and on one side of the argument at the same time.

I'd say, get something you know how to use. That way you can concentrate on designing rather than learning the OS. Unless of course, you want a change.

sure you can.
Simply defend the side being attacked.
Attack the PC, i defend it, attack the mac, i defend it.
that's being in the middle, you get hit by both sides...

Do not buy a MAC!

When you buy it, it already cost you an arm and a leg. When your MAC needs repair it will cost you half of your body.

Buy a high end PC with Windows XP in it.

have you evered owned a mac?
I dontknow about prices in the Philippines, but in North America and most of Europe, the prices are pretty good, especially for what they offer.
Also, I doubt it will need repairing :)

Then again, my PCs dont need repairing because I build them.

Im into graphic design and im going to buy a new G5. Maybe not the newest. 1.6ghz or dual 1.8ghz and a 20" apple cinema monitor.
I have used pc all my life but when i started studying graphic design i changed. Now I think mac is better and you don't have to worry about all the virus.

That's completely false, in any sense of the word. I've personally done testing with Photoshop between a friends dual processor G5 that ran him almost $5,000, and my Pentium 2.8 gHz, which cost me about $1400. I did it exactly because so many people blindly claim mac has some vastly better performance record, and I wanted to know for myself. What I tested in Photoshop, as far as load times and render times, the two machines results were virtually identical.

It's funny you mention googling.

Mac Slaughtered

That is the first site listed when I googled: mac vs pc in photoshop

Fact is Mac's may perform slightly better for some video editing, and people who grow up using Mac's are generally so intimidated by a PC they go into instant denial whenever someone says a PC might be a better option. If you know how either system works, both are very stable and both work very well. The last time my XP machine crashed was almost 8 months ago, and as it turned out that was due to a conflict between the BIOS and XP. These things happen.

When you're as big as Microsoft and you've got 10's of 1,000's of different companies writing software and firmware to work with your OS, issues are going to pop up. More than 90% of the working world is using Microsoft's OS'es, and among that 90%, the majority are largely inept and undereducated about PC's, leaving an irresistable target for hackers, virus writers, etc. Everyone wants a shot at the #1 contender.

Until Linux produces a viable end user system simple enough for the basic untechnical dummy to understand, Windows will rule.

As far as pricing goes, Mac's don't even begin to compete. PC prices will beat out Mac's anyday, anytime, anywhere. Repair costs for Mac are much higher because people who bother to learn Mac troubleshooting and hardware are few and far between. From personal experience of the people I've known who've owned Mac's, when it would start crashing they just put up with it, because nobody around town had a clue what was wrong with it. At least with Windows & Linux, they're mainstream enough you can find solutions to problems when they do occur.

So if you're comfortable using a Mac, by all means, go for it. If you're ALSO comfortable using a PC, you will save considerable amounts of money going that route and you'll get a machine just as capable (assuming you don't buy a piece of crap). :cheesy:
