At the risk of having some of my friends slap me around for saying this, I think it is smart to email owners of type-in domains. I have been getting these from several different people for some time and I don't think it's a big deal at all.

It can be argued that it makes the domain holder more likely to
jack up the price of his domain when there is multiple inquiries but I don't think these people are clueless that they have something of value anyway.

Type-in domains are worth a lot of money to anyone in the search arena.
When the demand is high, prices always follow as the laws of supply and demand apply to anything on earth.

There is a mad scramble at the moment where major companies as well as the small investor are out to get all they can. This is the new market like it or not.

Agressive marketing via email is working for people who employ it.
If I had the budget and resources That GregR does,
I would feel pretty foolish watching all the other guys buying the names because of the emails while I sat there worrying about "spamming".

The bottom line is, the window of opportunity is closing and the big players
who mass market are going to get some of the last of the good names.
The ones out there with the deep pockets are going to win and moaning and
groaning does not do us any good or change what is happening.

The new market is here to stay and we all must accept it and adapt accordingly....

Well said, HLK.

If people don't want business-to-business communications, whether email or telephone, they really shouldn't go into business online. All the screaming and ranting about getting an unexpected email is really bizarre.

I agree. I don't consider an unsolicited offer, addressed to me individually, about a matter related to my business, such as a domain name inquiry, to be spam. What I call spam, and object to vehemently are bulk email messages, sent in bulk, unsolicited, to multiple recipients at once, about something not uniquely directed at me.

There is a gray area, such as automated personalized "mail merge" campaigns in which boilerplate messages are sent in quantity, but one at a time, to many recipients, and these domain offers may fall into that category. Some will always label these as spam, but whatever you call them, I don't mind getting them.

If you are in business, you really can't put yourself in a position of saying nobody is allowed to contact you unless you contact them first, or unless you already have a business relationship with them.

I disagree. There are even some "business-to-business" communications that the senders should be ashamed of. It's a fact of life, but when you complain publically, it is an attempt to make it clear that it is unacceptable, and thereby reducing the scope of the practice due to stigma and decreasing the amount of goodwill for a brand (if that's important to you). The latest "bulk" transmissions of OEM software is getting ridiculous, but this is the "new thing", likewise the increase in SEO services (you know... the ones you actually get 20 times because the idiots are just sending them out in droves). Not so bad anymore are the bulk mail about printer toner, etc. If I could noogie all the knuckle heads who buy Viagra from their spam, I'd make the time.

Ranting and raving on unexpected e-mail is here to stay, and in MOST cases, more than warranted. One-time mailings specifically to my business are one thing, but it is unacceptable for someone to use the "cheapness" of the e-mail medium as an excuse to repeatedly solicit to me about the same service over and over and over. Welcome to hell.

Since when is a business inquiry considered spam???

When I get an unsolicited call or email from somebody who wants to become a client, I jump for joy and do a little office dance.

Even if I don't have quite what they are looking for, I am happy they found me and considered doing business with me.

Honestly, what kind of a society are we becoming that we cringe at every little thing that doesn't come to us prepackaged just the way we want it, perfectly to our specs?

Nobody is less forgiving of spammers than I am, but this does not sound like spam.

As I was saying, harder to wrap my head around it, but in the interest of clarity... Unsolicited Commercial Email... generally sent in BULK, is considered "spam". Due to the nature of it, I'd reserve saying it was spam... but if it wasn't mail specifically to ME... (as in, "Hello MYNAMEHERE, I am interested in buying names... blah blah". I mean, link campaigns can also fall into that category if you're just pumping out the mail without any prior person contact. Devil's advocate anywayz.

So how many have you sold to these guys ?
They aren't going to buy from you or me or anyone else that knows what the name is worth. Thus, they need to spend a little more time weeding out who they send their mails to.

These guys know damn well who the domainers are and they know we aren't selling them typein names cheap (like they are looking for) so I say clean up your lists.

I have got to agree with HLK, chatcher, moviedomains et al on this one.

But, getting the same email twice I would consider spam.

Thank you for your interest in the toejam.com domain name. At this time, The Procter & Gamble Company has no intention of selling the name.
