Please help. Web development degrees.....Where to start?

Hi all,

I recently acquired my bachelor's degree in economics, but am now looking to thoroughly build and design professional sites from scratch complete with seo. In short, a web developer. There are many degree programs out there. What programs would you recommend for this goal? Certificates? Associates? Bachelors? Masters? Is it possible to study for a master degree in web development w/o undergraduate courses? Looking for a starting point.

Any help/ tips/ advice/ previous experience would be much appreciated.

In my humble opinion - build it and they will come. Paper on the wall pales in comparison to actual work experience. If you are honest, responsible, reliable, and do quality work at fair prices you will have all the work you need. If you want to make good money & start a career that will be in demand for a long time, point yourself towards database programming. Mysql/PHP, .NET, Oracle, etc. All major web sites are or will have to become dynamic & database driven soon to compete.

I nice web portfolio is worth far more than any degree. Get a reseller hosting plan and start creating and launching sites on various topics that you can later refer to when talking with a potential client/employer. Not only is it good for your portfolio, but you can also make money with these sites on the side.

I will add though. If you intend to work for someone, particularly a large company, they often do require that piece of paper on the wall. So it depends on your ambitions.

If a piece of paper is your goal, then, of course, even going for a masters would require you to have a boatload of pre-requisites - more than likely from an undergrad level.

So, if that piece of paper is your goal, and you already have a bachelors degree, then you may just need to do the core courses (you already would have all the general studies and electives) and simply get a bachelor's degree in this (if such a degree as "web developer" exist - most likely computer programming).

Beyond that, there are places that do offer certificates based on the courses and set cirriculum established.

actually, that piece of paper adds no weight, without creativity

though one who has the skills and creativity without the paper...will be highly favored

in the end, your design portfolio will secure the deals

I dont think you require any degree or certificate course to learn development or programming.. it took me few months to learn html and now onto learning php.
It's all about reading tutorials, trying my hands on at editing/modifying code, and ofcourse working wit my developers to know what is what!!

So yes, dont waste time & money learning it from someone else and use free resources online
