There's a trademark for Polo, but Polo Shirts might be ok. The two problems I see is it's a .net, and the domain name is very specific, so you can only do a couple of things with it.
A) Sell Polo Shirts
B) Set up an auction site for others to sell their old Polo Shirts
I agree, the value is not much unless you are going to develop it.

Aren't polo shirts like T-shirts but with a small split and a couple of buttons at the top? In other words, aren't they a very common, generic item of clothing?

Absolutely right, Edwin.
"Poloshirt" is as generic as can be.
Just the fact that there are TM's on the word "polo" doesn't make "poloshirt" less generic.
Otherwise you'd have a problem with appletree.com and such
As for value:
Didn't grab this for resale reasons but developing in the first place.
With 10k+ searches for the term i think it's great for affiliate or ppc plus SEO.
Resale is not everything....

Mostly, because the domain although a factor, is not the main factor but content and links.
Second, as far as google goes, the algorithm changes all the time.
I believe that this "hyphen is better for SEO" is a myth nowadays and not true anymore with most engines.Not saying a hyphen name would have worse or better chances than without, just saying it's not such of a factor anymore.
One hint: The ovt suggestion tool in most cases shows you the searches for the term *with* a space in it even if you entered a term *without* one.
In fact, the only time it shows searches without space is when the term has enough searches as one word on its own as well.
There is a lot that could be said about SEO and diff people have diff experiences/opinions..

Overture is over-rated 
but "polo shirts" is a generic term.

I don't see a trademark problem. It has nothing to do with "Polo" Polo Shirts is a style, not a brand.
Never had a problem with my polo-shirts.com!
I was chasing that domain during the same drop - nice catch
As a man who knows his nets, I'd be looking for no less than US$600.
