Plaistow, just a couple of towns over from Salem - and I did spend a lot of time there. The mall was great when it was built (especially for bored teenagers to young 20's).
I also worked at the Staples across the street from the mall and *almost* became the Del manager of the Shaws at the old mall.
That's a good place to be - not far from Lawrence / Lowell, MA and a quick drive to Boston, it's also easy to get to Concord, Nashua, and Manchester from there since 93 runs right though there.
Also - if you want a quiet afternoon on the beach w/o all the business of Hampton - Rye is a great alternative. I forgot which beach I used to go to, though - it had a little shop across the street where you could park all day for $5.
