Happens a lot with other registrars to. NetSol has this problem the most I think.
They check whois output first.
If whois output is empty - they tell "available" and try to check real availability on registry level.
Now the worst thing. If the domain is already dropped, actually available - but still shows at whois - you would NOT be able to register it at powerpipe!
