Hey all,
I'm still fairly new at this whole game so, hear me out.
I have seen some HORRIBLE domains listed on this site, and I get the impression they are horrible because the owner is fairly new and is going into the .com suffix, where it's rare to find a good .com unreg'd these days. Thus, the crap is reg'd.
What got me interested in the whole idea of even doing anything with domains was: Mars.
I have been fascinated with the planet for some time now. Whenever I got to CNN it's always on the news section for Science and I go to lectures at the Perimeter Institute in KW, which hosts some of the greatest minds of our young century.
Anyways, we have all heard about the idea of screwing up Earth so badly that we will eventually Terrafrom to Mars, etc etc. I really don't know how realistic that is to occur, but as we discover more about the planet and technology advances, I thought I might try and pick up a piece of .com real estate that won't be ready to make a splash for a good decade +.
What I found was that someone had already thought of my idea, and years before that. Almost all of the Mars domains I wanted were taken by another domainer.
When I inquired about a small lot of 10 Mars domains, he asked for 11k. Fair enough, it was an investment opportunity, but I didn't have the budget for it.
I noticed most of the .net's were not taken for what he had in .com, so I took some of them. Then I thought about the idea more,
What I would really like is: MarsProperty.com, but it's gone. But what I remembered was that I could still get the official name, MartianProperty.com.
Anything from Mars is Martian. Now, since most of the public isn't really aware of Mars on a day to day basis, the word "Martian" brings to mind the Bugs Bunny Martin the Martian, or an alien. This is not the actual use of the term.
Anyways, I ended up buying several "Mars"something".net, like "MarsNews.net", MarsTimes.net, and a bunch of "MartianX"com, like MartianProperty, MartianTrip, MartianMinerals.com, etc.
My question is: Are these good for long term investments? When I bought these domains I bought them with the plan on holding onto them for at least a decade, maybe longer. If Mars became something we had no hope or interest in discovering and possibly moving to anymore, I would simply let them go at that time.
I have about 30 domains regarding the Planet. All highly relative and searchable keywords: Home, Money, Property, Minerals, Weather, Travel, etc. Basically stuff that would relate to the planet for us in the near future.
I'm wondering now if I should just drop the .net's, except for a few that I may want to keep for deveopments sake, and just keep the .com's and hope for the best.
Any, and I mean Any, good/bad/ugly comments are appreciated. This was my first reg of any domain and I wonder if the whole idea was silly, or a great investment opportunity down the road.
