Hey all,

I'm still fairly new at this whole game so, hear me out.

I have seen some HORRIBLE domains listed on this site, and I get the impression they are horrible because the owner is fairly new and is going into the .com suffix, where it's rare to find a good .com unreg'd these days. Thus, the crap is reg'd.

What got me interested in the whole idea of even doing anything with domains was: Mars.

I have been fascinated with the planet for some time now. Whenever I got to CNN it's always on the news section for Science and I go to lectures at the Perimeter Institute in KW, which hosts some of the greatest minds of our young century.

Anyways, we have all heard about the idea of screwing up Earth so badly that we will eventually Terrafrom to Mars, etc etc. I really don't know how realistic that is to occur, but as we discover more about the planet and technology advances, I thought I might try and pick up a piece of .com real estate that won't be ready to make a splash for a good decade +.

What I found was that someone had already thought of my idea, and years before that. Almost all of the Mars domains I wanted were taken by another domainer.

When I inquired about a small lot of 10 Mars domains, he asked for 11k. Fair enough, it was an investment opportunity, but I didn't have the budget for it.

I noticed most of the .net's were not taken for what he had in .com, so I took some of them. Then I thought about the idea more,

What I would really like is: MarsProperty.com, but it's gone. But what I remembered was that I could still get the official name, MartianProperty.com.

Anything from Mars is Martian. Now, since most of the public isn't really aware of Mars on a day to day basis, the word "Martian" brings to mind the Bugs Bunny Martin the Martian, or an alien. This is not the actual use of the term.

Anyways, I ended up buying several "Mars"something".net, like "MarsNews.net", MarsTimes.net, and a bunch of "MartianX"com, like MartianProperty, MartianTrip, MartianMinerals.com, etc.

My question is: Are these good for long term investments? When I bought these domains I bought them with the plan on holding onto them for at least a decade, maybe longer. If Mars became something we had no hope or interest in discovering and possibly moving to anymore, I would simply let them go at that time.

I have about 30 domains regarding the Planet. All highly relative and searchable keywords: Home, Money, Property, Minerals, Weather, Travel, etc. Basically stuff that would relate to the planet for us in the near future.

I'm wondering now if I should just drop the .net's, except for a few that I may want to keep for deveopments sake, and just keep the .com's and hope for the best.

Any, and I mean Any, good/bad/ugly comments are appreciated. This was my first reg of any domain and I wonder if the whole idea was silly, or a great investment opportunity down the road.

i think that the whole mars thing is really sci-fi and more of a lottery ticket than an investment. if you are willing to wait for a decade or more just reg domains such as firefox5.com or (or 6, 7 and etc), you get the idea.

Sometimes, especially when they have an interest in it, people tend to register domains that others can´t see the value of.

That is fair, because YOU have an idea about it, YOU like them.
Maybe there will be other people that have the same idea, then your domains will be worth something.

At the moment, I would estimate that you´ll have to wait a long time, if ever, they will be worth something. But then again, if you develop your domains, they might become popular - who knows.

Investment has to be based on objective data and statistics, not expectations.

At least half my portfolio is with future events, some in the present allready do quiete well because they panned out, the problem with this is the waiting for time to catch up, I wouldnt save to many of the mars names myself way too long a wait

Your investment window could be a long one
time till we buy properties on mars - many years, decades or never
a lunar landing or other event - a place to go for planet lunar information, research, astronomical information right now

I would never go to martianproerty.com to buy anything there, but I would go there to help my kids on a science project about the planet itself.

Maybe grow it into all the planets and become a science content source for people. podcasts, videos, school materials sales...education isbig and can be done in every language on the planet, this one that is.

My $0.02

Mars news would be a good site to develop. As investment domains i dont think you will be seeing any returns on Mars or any other space property in our lifetime.

Those would be too long an investment horizon for me, considering no one has stepped foot on Mars yet. And how much longer would it be before enough people need to search for property, shopping, banks, etc on Mars?

The only possibility I see is in video gaming, if someone develops a 'virtual world' that takes place on Mars. Virtual world type games are very popular and people who take part in them do spend actual money to upgrade their virtual world experience, by buying homes, weapons, etc.

It's really speculative. Can you register them for $100-$200? Great, do it. $11,000 to own the prime names? Don't do it. It would be like having the bulk of your investment money on penny stocks that may be big one day but have little chance of improving for several years.

Funny, I've always had a fascination with Uranus ...

But thats a story for another day.:tape2: :cheeky:

On a serious note, I associate 'Mars' with the chocolate bar primarily!
I wonder if the Mars company would have issues with it...

Anyway, its always worthy finding a niche and dominating the genre.
You never know whats around the corner.
