I want to recommend the following page on my firm's website. It has a very good introduction to trademarks, what they are, types of trademark protection, evaluating trademark infringement, and more.

It's a pretty quick read, and it will likely assist in answering many of the questions on this forum.

Common law trademarks are often marked with the signals “TM” or “SM” to designate that the owner seeks to protect those marks.

You can tell when a mark is federally registered when you see the symbol: ®.
