I always check names thoroughly before posting, and I assumed others did the same.

I do check them by running them through one of the standard "whois" programs right before I post anything.

I guess we could debate the definition of "thoroughly" but instead I will just keep them to myself from now on, because I sure as hell am not looking each one up by hand.

I'm sure everyone does a whois search before posting here.

Someone else could easily be in the process of registering a name while you are posting it here though.

It's just tough, and no amount of checking is going to overcome it, unless of course you use an automatic system like:

Sheepster automatically remove domains from their lists when the Whois changes

The two domains that DotComCowboy wanted to pick up are .org domains. I have experienced very weid whois behaviors with .org extensions. I tried to register a domain with enom yesterday; all went well until I got an e-mail 6 hours later that the domain was not available.

I guess it's part of the game.

You are right there - I have been hanging on a snap for a really important (to me) .org name and yesterday I got an email saying the registration details had gone from "Pending Delete" to "Active".
I decided to hang onto the snap for a while "just in case". This morning it has gone from "Active" to "Pending Delete" again! Bit like a suspense movie
