But due to the high overture search returns I figured that there will be value attached to it anyway, or am I wrong?

At least it's a highly generic search term!

Couple of things that just don't seem right about these ".com.cn" names. The marketing of these names have been about "attracting a large Chinese population with a '.com.cn" site. Forgive me for appearing to be a bit crass, but I don't think the chinese will think to type-in ..."recipes.com.cn" to go to a "recipe" site.... It will be something like "$&%&^#*&.com.cn" or "hungsyshe.com.cn"--roman character translation of recipe.

Until they figure out a real solution with the "Asian Character" problem, I think it's utterly disgraceful to market a "Roman-Character" chinese domain name...It's actually very laughable to say the least. My guess is the powers to be are trying to "make" global companies and domainers buy more names they don't need.

Some words of advice:

If you do manage to build a web site to attract this "large chinese audience" at the very least it should be tailored to the chinese which means you best not have "roman characters" on the site, otherwise you might as well flush your money down the toilet. Global companies with chinese related sites spend billions each year to insure the sites they create for this market "work". What works in the U.K or US doesn't necessarily work for the chinese.

Izopod made some good points. In my estimation, this domain is worth as much as recipes.cjb.net (a free redirection service). I think in one thread on the board, DomainPairs makes a good case about a subdomain being just as effective in a search engine as these .cn names. So, it would be cheaper to have a generic domain with keyword subdomains like:

recipes.greatfoodsource.com
cookbook.greatfoodsource.com
etc.


I for one won't be in any rush to get my .com.cn names

Cheaper yes but not sure if also more effective...

Say you wanted to build a network focused on _authentic_ Chinese cooking...

WOUld you choose ChineseRecipes.net over Recipes.net.cn?
What if ChineseRecipes.net was taken and Recipes.net.cn was available? WOUld you venture to a three-word .net or even a hyphenated .net name before regging a .net.cn?

Personally I would prefer a recipes.net.cn site about authentic Chinese noodles (as long as I could read it in English translation) over a pseudo-Chinese recipe site about microwavable sweet and sour pork cooking.
